Capital project upgrades have commenced at the Roma Saleyards

Maranoa Regional Council is excited to announce that capital project upgrades valued at over $5.5 million are now underway at the Roma Saleyards.
These upgrades aim to enhance the overall usability, safety, and quality of the complex, reinforcing its position as Australia’s marketplace of choice for livestock sales.
Following Council’s previous investment in the Primaries Road extension, completed in 2025, which improved accessibility to the facility, the new projects will build on the progress already made.
Current works include the replacement and realignment of three double-deck road train ramps. These upgrades are expected to significantly improve the efficiency and safety of this section of the facility. Additionally, work is underway to modernise the remaining sale walkways, ensuring consistency in infrastructure upgrades across the saleyards. These projects are being delivered by CJH Construction.
Further improvements taking place in the coming months include asphalt works at the existing truck hardstand. This project, co-funded by the Australian Government through the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program (SLRIP), will enhance the heavy vehicle parking area, which is used by both livestock and freight carriers. The facility serves as a critical transport hub for the region. Shamrock Civil has been contracted to complete the asphalt works.
Maranoa Regional Council Mayor Wendy Taylor, portfolio for Saleyards, looks forward to the upgrades and the benefits they will bring to the complex.
“These works will significantly enhance the overall usability, safety, and efficiency of our Saleyards. With 362,051 cattle, valued at $554,257,336.00, sold through the yards in the 2025/26 financial year, the Roma Saleyards are an incredibly important economic driver for our region. As the largest cattle-selling facility in Australia, it is vital to ensure our saleyards remain a leader in infrastructure quality and operational practices,” Mayor Taylor said.
The weekly Roma Sale will continue to operate as usual on Tuesdays as the works take place, as will the upcoming stud sales. However, traffic changes and disruptions are to be expected in areas as they are being upgraded, and Council appreciates the community’s understanding during this time.
These capital upgrades align with the Roma Saleyards Master Plan, which is currently being finalised. The Master Plan, expected to be released to the public in August 2026, will focus on improving operational efficiency, enhancing infrastructure, and identifying opportunities for future growth.
